Cava Baja Street, just a short walk from Plaza Mayor, is a top destination for anyone looking to enjoy tapas in Madrid. This street is home to both historic taverns and modern culinary hotspots.
What makes Cava Baja Street special?
What we love about Cava Baja is the sheer density of experiences packed into its 300 meters. You can feel the history in the cobblestones, but the air is electric with the clatter of plates and conversation spilling out from dozens of bars. It's a place where you can find a dusty, old-school tavern serving vermouth on tap right next to a slick spot with a modern take on tradition. A whole vibe.
Which tapas should you try on Cava Baja?
Of course, you have to try the classics: creamy, melt-in-your-mouth croquetas and perfectly crisp patatas bravas with that spicy kick. But the real fun starts when you explore the new wave, like smoky cecina (cured beef) croquettes that surprise your palate or bravas drizzled with an intense black garlic aioli. If you're really hungry, nothing beats a plate of huevos rotos—runny yolks soaking into fried potatoes. A Madrid classic.
Traditional taverns vs. modern proposals
Guests ask us this every week at reception: where should we go? The answer depends on your mood. You can step back in time at a place like Casa Lucio, famous for its simple but legendary huevos estrellados, where the atmosphere is loud, traditional, and unapologetically Madrileño. Or you can sample the modern side of the street at spots like Taberna La Concha, where they're experimenting with creative flavour combinations and even have fantastic vegan tapas. You can't go wrong.
When is the best time to visit Cava Baja?
Timing is everything on Cava Baja. We love the buzz of the early evening, around 8 PM, when the street fills up with locals for the aperitivo hour and the energy is contagious. Weekends get intense, with a river of people flowing from one bar to the next; it's a scene. It’s powerful. But not for everyone. If you prefer a more relaxed pace to actually savour your food and chat, aim for a Tuesday or Wednesday night.
It's where Madrid's culinary past and future collide on a single, vibrant street. Go hungry.
How to get to Cava Baja from our hostels?
One of the best parts is how incredibly close it is. From our doorstep at Inter Plaza Mayor, you're literally a three-minute stroll away. If you're staying with us at Inter Puerta del Sol, it's a lovely five-minute walk that takes you right across the stunning Plaza Mayor. You can leave the hostel and be ordering your first tapa in less time than it takes to choose a filter for your photo.
